Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic — Samaná Province

A sandy beach in Las Terrenas, bordered by shallow reef to the east and west with open water in between, where conditions vary a lot by season. From roughly December through April, north and northwest swells make the water more technical — good for intermediate/advanced riders, including first freefly runs on open ocean swell rather than a single breaking wave. From May through September, especially June through August, the water close to shore is generally much flatter and can be very suitable for beginners with local instruction. Either way, know exactly where the reef zones sit to the east and west and avoid them — the central riding area works well when daily conditions are appropriate.
