Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic — Samaná Province

An advanced-only spot on a sandy beach in Las Terrenas, bordered by shallow reef to the north and south with open water in between — good wave riding depending on swell direction, but not a place to learn the basics. The reefs sit downwind of the sailing area, so a mistake here compounds: if you get in trouble, you're getting swept toward the hazard, not away from it. Know exactly where you are relative to both reefs at all times. Met Julian, a local kiteboarding and wing foiling instructor, while sailing here — didn't take a lesson from him, but he was generous with advice and pointers. Find him at wingfoil-lasterrenas.com.
