Gear Maintenance & Repair Basics

The post-session habits, storage routine, and basic repairs that keep a wing, board, and hydrofoil working — and keep you from replacing gear that just needed a rinse.

A wing, board, and foil represent real money, and none of them are designed to be rinsed, dried, and put away carefully — a couple of bad habits repeated all season are what actually shorten a setup's life, not one hard landing. None of this is complicated. It's mostly rinsing things properly and not leaving gear somewhere it can slowly cook or corrode.

The One Habit That Matters Most: Rinse Everything, Every Time

Fresh water, after every session, on everything — the wing, the board, and especially the foil's mast base, fuselage, and stabilizer bolts, where salt and sand collect and corrosion actually starts. Clear sand out of the board's footstrap tracks while you're at it. Then dry everything fully before it goes back in a bag or a car. Storing gear wet and assembled is the single most common way people ruin hardware and grow mildew in a wing bladder — far more damage happens sitting in a garage than out on the water.

Wing Care

Rinse with fresh water only — skip soap, dish detergent, or any cleaning chemical, since they can break down the canopy's laminate and its UV coating. Speaking of UV: heat and sun are the wing's real enemies. Don't leave it inflated in direct sun longer than you have to, and never leave it in a hot car — enough heat can damage the internal bladder and the valves themselves, not just fade the fabric.

For storage, skip stuffing it tightly into its bag. Fold both wingtips in so they meet in the middle, then roll it loosely, and keep it somewhere cool, dry, and shaded — a garage shelf is fine, a car trunk in the sun is not.

Small canopy tears (away from the leading edge or the strut) are a real DIY fix: clean and fully dry the area, cut a piece of sail repair tape (most wings ship with some) a little larger than the tear with rounded corners so it doesn't peel at a sharp edge, and apply it to both sides of the canopy. Damage to the leading edge or the strut itself is a different story — that's the wing's actual air-frame, and a repair there needs a real shop or the brand's own repair service, not tape. Don't ride on a wing with leading-edge or strut damage you're not sure is sound.

Hydrofoil Care

Foils are aluminum, stainless steel, and often carbon all bolted together, and that combination corrodes if you ignore it. After every saltwater session, rinse the mast base, fuselage, and stabilizer hardware — don't skip this because "it's just the foil." Every couple of rides in saltwater (every few weeks is fine in fresh water), put a little grease or anti-seize on the screws — most foils ship with a small tube of it for exactly this reason — and loosen and re-seat each bolt rather than leaving them cranked down for the whole season. That keeps dissimilar metals from slowly seizing together, which is a much bigger repair than a five-minute maintenance habit. If you ever see a white, powdery residue on a bolt or joint, that's corrosion starting — clean it off right away rather than waiting for it to get worse.

Carbon fuselages and masts need a lighter touch: keep them out of long direct-sun exposure, use a padded cover when you transport or store the foil, and don't overtighten bolts going into carbon — it doesn't flex like aluminum does. If a carbon edge picks up a small burr or scuff, only smooth it with fine wet sandpaper (600-grit or finer); anything coarser can weaken the surface.

Board Care

The same rinse-and-dry routine applies — fresh water, then fully dry before it's put away. Small dings in the deck or rail are a genuine DIY repair using the same kind of epoxy ding-repair kit sold for surfboards and paddleboards: tape off the area, sand it enough to fully expose the crack (removing any loose, unstable material first), then build the patch back up in thin layers — epoxy resin mixed with fiberglass cloth, adding a lightweight filler if you need to shape it back to level — letting each layer cure (roughly 24 hours) before sanding and adding the next.

Know when to stop. If the damage goes past the surface into the board's foam core, or you see any sign of delamination (the outer skin separating from the core), that's a real structural repair — take it to a shop rather than learning epoxy layup on a board you actually want to keep riding. And if a board ever takes on water, dry it out fully in a warm, dry space for several days before storing or riding it again — don't leave it in direct sun to speed that up, since the trapped moisture can actually cause the deck to bulge as it heats.

Storing Everything for the Off-Season

The rules above all matter most here, since gear sits still for months at a time: never put anything away wet or assembled. Store indoors, away from direct sun and away from anything that gets hot (a garage that bakes in summer sun is worse than it looks). For a foil you won't touch for a while, it's worth fully disassembling it — keep the hardware together in a labeled bag so nothing gets lost by spring. The wing stays loosely rolled in its bag, not crushed flat under other gear.

A Simple Repair Kit Worth Keeping Around

A few cheap things, kept in a bag with the rest of your gear, cover most of what actually goes wrong: sail repair tape for small canopy tears (check what came with your wing before buying more), a basic epoxy ding-repair kit for the board, a small tube of grease or a roll of Teflon (plumber's) tape for foil hardware, and the correct hex/Allen keys for your specific foil's bolts — worth keeping a spare set in your car or gear bag, not just at home, since a loose fitting is a lot easier to deal with roadside than it sounds.

None of this replaces a real shop when something's actually broken — leading-edge damage, a cracked mast, a delaminated board. But most of what actually happens to gear over a season is corrosion and neglect, not catastrophic damage, and that part is genuinely preventable with about five minutes of habit after every session.
